I have been updating both this blog and the one on my website for a year now. It is time to shut this one down. So for all my blogger readers, you can now find my thoughts and whimsy at the following link:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I will still continue to post every Thursday. Tune in!Ginger Twisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17685134796678712523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8205775112117134894.post-27822294584568862952014-05-29T11:29:00.003-07:002014-05-29T11:29:49.680-07:00Another Busy Week of FOs and WIPs<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">And it has been another busy week at GTS HQ. Knitting, dye studio, and more knitting. Tuesday was another intense day spent in the dye studio. The results are mostly Delight 4ply with a sprinkling of Splendor 4ply, as well a new sock base (love!). The online shop should be updated again this weekend if you don't have time to come in for a peek in the woolly flesh.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">And as I've just gotten in a new pattern shipment from Louise Zass-Bangham, I decided to cast on another Knit Night. I have continued to dream of having a bright yellow neck item, so I've decided to use Ginger's Hand Dyed Sturdy Splendor 4ply in the Liquid Sunshine colour way. This knits up as some seriously soft and squishy garter stitch, and keeps me cheery on overcast days like today. I also plan on doing a beaded cast off, as I have some aquamarine beads in the shop that would really pop.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I spent most of yesterday evening finishing up a cardigan. This pattern is available in the latest Navia Pattern Book available at GTS, and of course I made it cropped. This only took 4 balls of the Wendy Guernsey 5ply (2 in each colour). You are meant to add a 3rd shade on for the button band and cuffs, but I chose to just stick with this classy blue. Feel free to take a look at my Ravelry project page. Sewing pieces together can be a bit soul draining, but this project just reminded me how important it is to take the time to properly finish an item. For those of you not in the know, we are running the Finishing School Workshop again in September. What has been deemed my School Days Cardi is still blocking, but how cute are these coconut shell buttons?!
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The
Wool of the Month, Excelana 4ply, has done really well. I am delighted
to be keeping it around as a permanent instalment on my shelves. I'm still plotting another shop sample, as the Nile Green (delicious minty shade) has been calling my name. If you
have been in the shop, you may have noticed I am missing 2 shades of the
collection (Saharan Sand and Natural Alabaster). These should be
arriving in this week. Hurrah for more Excelana!
It gave me a fresh perspective some ideas to use in my future posts.

Now the sun has come out, and I just feel like knitting something fun! Endless Rainbow by Martina Behm fits the ticket. It was an interesting start, which took a couple attempts. Now I'm getting into the groove of the pattern, and loving working with this yarn. West Yorkshire Spinners BFL is so soft and creamy. It's fun to penetrate this pureness with triangles and stripes of Aire Valley DK Rainbow Stripe by West Yorkshire Spinners. Delish!

This is also about the time of year that I start working on some Christmas gifts, just so I can do this gradually, and not in an absolute panic. I've started on Hunter by Tin Can Knits out of the New Lanark Aran, which is using up some of my stash. I've got plans to do another in the Brigantia Luxury Aran. The cables are actually quite simple, and look impressive enough. All the men in my life need to have this hat large and small!
This past Tuesday was spent in the dye studio plotting and scheming. I have dyed up something particularly special for the Indie Burgh Yarn Crawl. More info soon on that particular plot soon! I will update the online shop early next week with some new shades and such, so keep your eyes peeled for virtual squishing! In the meantime, I have gotten in 8 new shades of the Cascade 220 Superwash. These are also now available for perusal in the online shop. I'm still brainstorming on a sample to knit up for the shop in one of these new shades. Any thoughts?
Their place was always where the whole family gathered for every holiday, birthday, and whatever else. Not to mention, they have a pool, so there was many a Summer day to be spent splashing around in their backyard.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">We were always a crafty family. Not only does Nana knit and crochet, but she is a very talented sewer, baker (best cookies ever) and jigsaw puzzle extraordinaire. She is ALWAYS working on something. As a child I remember having a purple crochet blanket made by this lovely lady. I adored that thing, and hope that it is stored somewhere back at my folks' house (Ma, can you confirm?!). As I got a bit older I started making specific requests for various hand knit and crochet items. Then I thought, why don't I just learn how to perform this mystical skill myself?!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">So it was around the age of 12 or 13 that I asked my Nana to teach me the magic that is knitting. I came to find out that this is not magic at all. <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Knitting is really a system of making loops upon loops that create a fabric...okay, so it is pretty magical. I'm also left-handed, and Nana taught me how to knit in this fashion. It was quite a challenge for her to teach me to knit backwards essentially, and I'm so delighted she did! Unfortunately I don't have any photographic evidence of this wee adventure. I really have my Nana to thank for where my life has lead to this point. Thanks Nana! Ginger Twisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17685134796678712523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8205775112117134894.post-85889543237795968592014-05-16T01:32:00.001-07:002014-05-16T01:32:58.727-07:00Day 5: Moth Assassination & Demolition

Please refrain from any quips about how my first name is the same as my surname, thank you. After all, we hardly know one another and should keep things on proper and pleasant terms.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">So yes, with that business taken care of shall we carry on? I suppose you will be wanting to know my purpose in life, duties, etc. First allow me to begin with a description. I am perfect in every way (rather like Mary Poppins). My blue satin exterior gives off a calm and cool aura.I am a also a very organized individual. Every thing and thought has its place, and mine are all in perfect order.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I spend my days as governess and general guide in life to Miss James. She would truly be lost without my guidance, as she has spoken these exact words herself. We do go everywhere together; tending shop, out for a quiet evening at the pub, to the park, or for a cinema outing. There are a few holidays in our history as well. We do enjoy one-another's company immensely, and as I said before, Miss James truly needs me. Why just this morning we rose a bit early to do a bit of work on the latest Simmer Dim Shawl. This shawl involves switching between two different needle sizes quite frequently on the border. I came to her aid as always, doling out the needle tips as needed.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoy my job and life's work. Thank you for your time and consideration. Ginger Twisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17685134796678712523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8205775112117134894.post-50450740170316133242014-05-14T00:52:00.000-07:002014-05-14T00:52:15.681-07:00Day 3: Epic Kitten Journey

Here is a look at her online dating profile. Please note that this is not how she hooked Gustavo.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The first thing people notice about me: My stunning stripes. My ears are usually curled over my eyes, as I can be a shy lady when amongst strangers. It takes a second glance to notice my glossy whiskers and curious eyes.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Five things I could not live without: Wool, cheese, chocolate, peanut butter, and gin. Och, gin should go at the top of the list.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The one thing I am most passionate about: Wool...and gin.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">The three things I am most thankful for: Knit club (although I don't make it to the meetings as much as I would like), my pal Jess, and the fact that Jess does not actually own a cat (this would most certainly complicate our relationship).
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I am looking for: A manly mouse that is also available to do my bidding, bring me tea and biscuits in bed, as well as support my fibre habit.
Day 1 = a day in the life of Rachel the Town Mouse.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Life is good for a city mouse in Edinburgh. A typical day in the life of Rachel starts off with a moderate lie in, along with the occasional cuppa tea in bed. This lovely rodent then makes her way, along with her pal Jess to Ginger Twist Studio, thus starting her work day.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">She then spends a majority of the day reclining in piles of wool and receiving visits from her current boyfriend, Gustavo. She doesn't really have to interact with customers all that much (she is shy), as she primarily observes and manages Jess.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Monday is knit club night at the pub. Rachel tends to get the party started in the shop with gin in teacups. The drinking sometimes starts too early and Rachel passes out or has some sort of accident before closing up shop. Her presence at knit night is therefore limited. Here she is earlier this year, after having fallen down the steps into the basement. She is quite a lush really.
The result is a squishy and delightful yarn with a bit of a halo in a very very vintage palette. Oooo that pink! And check out that refreshingly minty green! This is not only going to be a Wool of the Month, as I plan on stocking this yarn on a regular basis.Hurrah!
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> And now a wee yarn crawl update for ye. In case you have not noticed, here is a completed copy of the yarn passport, both sides. These are now available for pick up in all participating yarny locations. If you are not able to pick up a shiny new passport before the event, it might be helpful to print one out yourself in the scenario there are none left on the day. If you are interested in joining (everyone is welcome) here is the pattern I have been using. It is top down, in the round, written by a lovely woman (C.C. Almon) at knit club, and is perfect for using up all those scraps! I've completed 2 thus far, and the deadline is at the end of June.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Ginger Twist Studio: Thanks again Anna for taking part in the Designer of the Month programme at Ginger Twist Studio. Now for a few questions. How did you start knitting? Who taught you and what was your first project?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Anna Wilkinson: I
don’t remember the exact age that I first picked up a pair of knitting
needles and started to try, but I think the age I felt comfortable
knitting was around 6 or 7. My mother taught me and always encouraged me
with balls of fun yarn and patterns. I remember making a lot of scarves
and mittens for friends and I have a distant memory of a foul
brown/beige shapeless jumper in a thicky furry yarn....
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">GTS: And
going from that, how did you turn into a designer? Would you consider
this something you do for fun, or is it part of your career? Does it
link up to your ‘day job?’
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">AW: I
always really liked making things and I’m very fortunate that my
brothers and I were always encouraged to be creative by our parents so
it was never a huge decision to study knitwear or to try and make it my
career, it just happened really. I went to college to study fashion,
leaving quite an academic school, and then went on to Winchester School
of Art to study textiles and I then specialised in knitwear after my
first year. I do consider knitwear a huge part of my career now. I work
freelance in a few different areas but am lucky that knitting has become
central to my working life but it is also something that I do for fun. I
feel very fortunate to be able to work every day doing something that I
really love.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">GTS: It seems to
me, particularly with you book Learn to Knit, Love to Knit, you take
inspiration from vintage styles. Do you have a favourite time period
with respect to fashion? And how would you classify your personal style?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">AW: I
love looking to vintage garments for inspiration as they often feature
really lovely unique details that are so hard to find in modern fashion.
Vintage hand made knitwear in particular often seems much more
considered and carefully made. It’s hard to be too specific about a
particular time frame....I think anything from the 30’s to the 60’s/70’s
is likely to have me as a fan...I’m quite enjoying 70’s collars at the
moment and big Pucci style paisleys...but I will always love 40’s/50’s
silhouettes and neat shapes.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">GTS: I
know it is probably like choosing between children, but do you have a
piece or 2 that you are super proud of designing and/or knitting?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">AW: It
is quite difficult to say...From my book I would say that the
college-style cardi and the slip stitch cape were possibly my
favourites...though ask me next month and my answer could be different! I
think these two stand out as two garments in my book that took a while
to write the patterns for and then actually construct so they were
labours of love.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">GTS: Any skills/techniques left to learn on your knitting or crafting bucket list?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">AW: Yes!
Hundreds! I would love to be a much more technical knitter. I often
start making up my designs one way and a fellow knitter will point out a
much simpler way with a technique I’ve never tried before! But for this
year I think I’d really like to get better at knitting socks!
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">GTS: I notice you have a penchant for bright and fun colours. Do you have any other desiger trademarks?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">AW: I’m
not sure...I think I’m definitely attracted to neat and simple garment
shapes but like to make the actual fabric interesting with colours or
textures...And I do like to have fun when designing and making. A
pattern has to be exciting enough to compel someone to really want to
buy yarn and make it. I love to feel excited by something that I’m
designing.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">GTS: Would you like to publish more pattern books? What is your next step in the crafting world?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">AW: Well
I’m extremely excited to say that I have just begun work on my second
book... It’s in very early stages at the moment so I shan’t divulge too
much now! I’ve also been working on some other knitting patterns that
will be available online shortly.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">GTS: Any random tips for all the knitters and budding designers out there?

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">AW: Always write down/sketch ideas and have fun. You can knit
anything you have in your head (within reason...). The possibilities are
endless!

You don't always have to purchase the exact same yarn used in a project, Why not put your own spin on a pattern? Just bear in mind, there are several things to consider when substituting a different yarn: weight, yardage, fibre content, and colour. Hint hint: Ravelry is great for finding out what weight a yarn is classed as, if it does not specify on the label.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I love the Shawl Collar Cardigan by Anna Wilkinson (as modelled by Joan). Alpaca was used for the original design that I presently have displayed in the shop, but anything in a dk weight will do. Now alpaca has a significant amount of drape, but I thought this cardi would really suit a yarn with a bit more structure. Put your hands together for the amazing Anna Wilkinson. I must admit that I was immediately drawn to her designs, as many of them have a vintage feel (crop that jumper!) with fun & funky colours.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Anna had a knitting book published in 2012: Learn to Knit, Love to Knit. <span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">This book is now being stocked at Ginger Twist Studio. Come in for a look at all her amazing samples and a flip through. There are so many lovely things she has sent me (all from the book). They shall be rotated round the shop throughout the month. Here is Joan sporting another school girl rendition. This seems to be one of her favourite fashion themes as of late.
And what good is a secret if other's can't be yearning to know what it is?! Now it is time to spill the beans! This year shall be the first year of an official yarn crawl for Edinburgh. It has been deemed:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">And all the villagers rejoiced!! It's about high time Edinburgh had this event under its belt. So mark your calendars for Saturday 21 June, 2014. There will be more information to come on obtaining your Yarn Passport, joining a group, the after-party and more. But for now, here are the shops that are taking part. We are a trio of fantastic ladies (I dare anyone to contradict!).
Imagine we are all sitting round the campfire and Lucas has a flash light which he is shining up at his face from below (which puts ones nostrils all aglow). This is the tale of the spooky Steeking! (dramatic pause for effect) MWAHAHAHAHAHA! Okay, take it away Lucas.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Steeking (definition): an
eight-letter word that strikes fear into the hearts of knitters
everywhere, usually followed by the shocked reaction “You want to
do what?!” You heard me right; I’m going to cut a
big hole in my knitting.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Steeking is a technique whereby
front openings, armholes or necklines are cut out of a piece of
knitting after the body is already finished. Steeking allows you to
knit garments completely in the round; by not having to work a wrong
side the knitting process is faster, results in a more consistent
tension especially when doing colourwork, and you have far fewer ends
to weave in when you’re done.

Is it Over Yet?February is my least favourite month. It is a time when I really feel the gaping hole that my best gal pal Rachel left behind. She passed away just a little over 3 years ago in the Christchurch earthquake, and was the coolest and kindest lady I've ever met. Three years is a chunk of time, and one would think it would stop hurting. Newsflash: it does not, and I don't know if it ever will.

This being so, I really threw myself into the Ravellenics, and am feeling a bit of a knitty burnout (GASP!). So yesterday I treated myself to a haircut (getting my hair washed is the BEST part). And I can highly recommend Dionne at Charlie Miller at Holy Corner in Edinburgh! What an amazing blow dry!

I've also done a bit of knitting that was not specifically for the shop. As in, I'm using up some random personal stash. This is Almandine by Anushka Tay, featured in Pom Pom Quarterly, Issue 6: Autumn 2013.
Do you see it?
One can see I'm getting on a real Anna Wilkinson kick. I've caked up the yarn, but just keep staring at it and petting each lustrous cake. Is this normal?
Which is definitely a good thing! In knitting news, the Ravellenics have begun, and I'm well on my way with a few more days to go. For those not in the know, the Ravellenics runs alongside the Olympics. You can join a team if you like. I'm on the Geeky Girls Knit team, and its been really motivational. The Ravellenics, like the Olympics, is about challenging yourself. In this period, one is encouraged to craft like mad, maybe trying out or working on techniques that one is not quite so comfortable with. I don't think I will quite manage to enter every category...
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Here is a peek at what I've been up to.
everything must be Gorblimey. The pattern is another free one of the
amazing Ravelry, called Comforting Herringbone Cowl by Rose Jordan.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"> It's a really simple and effective pattern knit in the round with
chunky wool = super quick project. I find its good for me to keep a
balance between having some quick and easy projects on the needles/hook,
as along with some projects that are a bit more of a time investment.
Keeps me always interested.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Now onto some mouse related matters. Some of you may already know Rachel the Town Mouse.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Her life is chalk full of knit club, shop minding, and wine. But lately Rachel has felt she wanted someone in her life to share this lovely life with. She's tried online dating, which never amounted to anything. Why couldn't she just meet a nice mouse man who would love her, appreciate her knitting skills and serve her tasty beverages? Is it so much to ask??
